Evangelicalism is the historic, biblical faith built on the Gospel — the Good News that God saves sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Evangelicalism is NOT…
- A sect — Evangelicals profess the apostolic faith held by Christians across the centuries
- A foreign movement — biblical faith knows no national borders; it is universal
- Brainwashing — freedom of conscience and personal conviction are at the heart of the Evangelical faith
- Coercion or manipulation — no one is pressured; each person comes to faith freely and by their own will
What is Evangelicalism?
Evangelicalism is a branch of Protestant Christianity faithful to the Holy Trinity — the God of the Bible.
- “Gospel” translates from Greek as “good news”
- Focus on Jesus Christ — the only Savior of the world from sin
- Faith in the Bible as the inspired and infallible Word of God
- Salvation by faith alone in Jesus Christ — not by works, rituals, or merit
- Every believer has direct access to God through prayer, without intermediaries
Five Core Beliefs
Evangelicalism rests on five simple but profound convictions:
- Scripture alone — the Bible is the only supreme authority for faith, not tradition or church leadership
- Faith alone — salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, not through good works or rituals
- God’s grace alone — salvation is an undeserved gift from God; we cannot earn it by anything we do
- Christ alone — Jesus is the only Savior and Mediator between God and humanity
- For God’s glory alone — the purpose of life is to glorify God in everything we do
Evangelicalism and Bulgaria
Evangelicals have deep roots in the history of Bulgaria:
- Evangelical missionaries told the world about the Batak Massacre, helping bring about Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule
- The family of John Atanasoff — the father of the modern computer — was saved by Evangelicals
- The first Bulgarian to graduate from Harvard — Stoyan Vatralski — was an Evangelical and the first preacher of our church in Haskovo
- Evangelicals established some of the first modern schools in Bulgaria
- The first translation of the Bible into modern Bulgarian was the work of Protestant missionaries, including Petko Slaveykov
